Crewel work is a traditional form of embroidery, using woolen yarn, which has been in use for about five centuries. Mave Glenny explains the fascinating history of the craft and sets out the basic steps involved, offering special advice on use of color and backgrounds to offset the embroidery.

Seventeen varied projects offer something for everyone, including simple floral patterns and more complicated Jacobean-style designs. Many of the projects have practical as well as decorative purposes and include a spectacle case, writing pad case, trinket box, cushion covers and a needlework organizer. Each project has a color photograph of the finished piece, a pattern indicating the stitches used and clear written instructions which include details of thread colors. A special Stitch Dictionary uses step-by-step diagrams to show how to form over thirty traditional stitches used in crewel embroidery.
