Victorian Embroidery is a wonderful collection of more than thirty sumptuous designs from probably the richest period of crafts history. Freda Parker, embroidery expert and crafts journalist, gives the reader a unique opportunity to recreate historically authentic pieces using basic embroidery techniques.

Each project has been abstracted from an original Victorian design and starts with beautiful color location photography. Full practical instructions are then given with either a large-scale counted thread chart or a full-size trace-off pattern. Accompanying the designs are 100 exquisite photographs, all specially commissioned for the book and reproduced in color.

Among the treasures featured in these pages are cushions, curtains, small accessories and embroidered house linens, together with a number of elegant gifts. Bead embroidery enhances colorful cushions and a draw-string purse; whitework (a much loved Victorian technique) provides motifs for a baby gown; colorful Berlin work in wool on canvas is illustrated with a pair of slippers and a smart case for spectacles; a smock displays traditional embroidery at its best and a chapter on ribbon work takes a fresh look at acharming old craft. Finally, there is a section on samplers, with motifs and an alphabet for creating your own commemorative embroideries.

This is a magnificent book that evokes a bygone, gracious age when gentlewomen plied their needles in the pursuit of excellence in needlework and the creation of beauty.
