Embroidered Samplers is two books in one. In part it is highly practical. Dorothea Kay has designed ten sampler patterns dating in inspiration and style from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, each accompanied by complete graph patterns for making each one. There are also numerous extra motifs, borders and alphabets to enable the embroiderer to adapt and elaborate her own traditional sampler designs. Each piece has its own history and is adapted by the author from original samplers now in museums and private collections. All stitches used are explained in diagram form and the patterns range in scope from easy to challenging.

The book's other strength is in the fascinating picture that it provides of the growth and decline of the craft. Over four hundred years, sampler work changed from the highest expression of the embroiderer's abilities to the pious cross stitch exercise of the Victorian child. Yet, as the illustrations in the book show, each phase in the sampler's development has a charm of its own.

Embroidered Samplers enables the needleworker to recreate the charm for herself.
