In its origin, a sampler was an example or sample of stitches used in embroidery. It was, in foundation, a pattern book in the form of a piece of linen onto which new patterns and designs, new stitches and color combinations were worked. This book gives an analysis of stitches and designs, of materials and color harmonies. An aesthetic appreciation is given of this traditional form of needlework and its historical development is traced. A section of the book is devoted to the literature worked on samplers. Thirty-eight full page photographs of beautifully produced samplers from the 17th century onwards provide an eloquent tribute to this art.
