This book was prepared in conjunction with the exhibit of the same name held December 5, 1998 to September 6, 1999 at the DeWitt Wallace Gallery. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has collected seventeenth-century needlework from the earliest years of its inception as a museum. The collection of seventeenth-century British embroidery is less well known than the eighteenth-century collection, yet it is a significant group of objects, ranging from jewel-like cases with multilayered needlework to boldly patterned bed curtains. The photographs contained in this book are a sheer visual delight.
