"Talking about samplers..." The interest in samplers has increased dramatically and steadily over the years. Sampler exhibits stimulated this interest along with the publication of catalogs and booklets dedicated to the history of sampler making. Early books and catalogs offered a brief overview of early girl's schools and the role samplers played in their education, but the appetite for more information grew steadily. The first part of this book deals with the emergence of the sampler and its importance as a part of education. The origin of embroidery patterns is discussed along with their introduction into education. The effect of schoolbooks on the sampler is examined and advertisements for girls' schools in the 17th and 18th centuries are analyzed. The remainder of the book explores the embroidery techniques used to create samplers and the wealth of patterns available. Examples of samplers, Dutch samplers in particular, are studied to differentiate them from one another based on different provinces. The illustrations throughout out the book serve as a source of inspiration for sampler makers.
