The historical Rotterdam Museum possesses a large and special collection of darning samplers and, because many publications have been produced that focus on samplers in general, they wanted to produce a catalog which paid extra attention to their darning samplers. Their collection, complemented by fine examples from other museums and private collections, gives a wonderful overview of what girls twelve years old and older created in the area in the early centuries. These gorgeous examples were executed on white linen using beautifully colored silk threads as shown in the many images provided in both color and black-and-white. Also included is a list of about 145 girls schools active in the Netherlands between the years 1672 and 1752 showing how much value parents attached to good education, and especially craft education, for their daughters. Finally, there is a list of museums in the Netherlands where similar samplers may be found. (A two-page summary is provided at the back of the book in English)
